  3. The exhaust valves
  4. allow the burned
  5. fuel-air mixture to
  6. escape from the
  7. combustion chamber
  8. and out through the
  9. exhaust manifold,
  10. muffler and
  11. tailpipe.  The
  12. exhaust valves are
  13. held in the closed
  14. position by valve
  15. springs during the
  16. intake,
  17. compression, and
  18. power strokes.  At
  19. the end of the
  20. power stroke the
  21. camshaft opens the
  22. exhaust valve and
  23. the ascending
  24. piston forces the
  25. exhaust gases out.
